ADHD Perth Support Group Quiz Night

The ADHD Support Group are holding their Annual Quiz Night & Grand Raffle on Friday the 25th of November 2011 at the Tulloch Institute in Perth, Scotland. The evening begins at 7pm, and all are welcomed to join in, to help make the night a huge fundraising success! Individuals who are able to come along and join with others to form a team on the night would be very welcomed.

The cost for this event is £5 each for a team of 4 people, and this will include refreshments and supper. All proceeds will go towards sustaining our ADHD Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Befriending Youth Groups which run each week in Perth and offer a wide and diverse range of activities to vulnerable youngsters suffering from this very complex and misunderstood disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be immensely isolating and frustrating due to the very challenging behaviours that accompany it, which affect all members of the family unit.

We are a specialised Support Group offering help, support, information and services to local youngsters in our local communities helping them to cope better and reach their full potential.

Welfare Rights Course For Parent Carers Perth Scotland

Carers are a vital part of the health and community care system - although they are generally unpaid whilst making a massive contribution to society. Most carers do not see themselves as carers at all, and say they are simply doing “what anybody would do” in their situation. Even still - days and nights can be long, and the responsibility can be overwhelming - 24 hour a day concern for loved ones well being, both for the present and the future, as well as meeting all the physical and mental demands.

Although a few hours away from their situation will not change what carers go home to, it provides the space and time to be in a different head space. This can be of great benefit, as well as the chance to put them in touch with other Carers - sharing experiences, knowledge and to be around others who understand.

As part of PKAVS, Perth’s Carers Centre have organised several courses and activities for Carers of all types - covering a range of subjects , the next one to be held is about Welfare Rights.

Duck Eggs Perthshire Scotland

Happened along this rather ironic box of duck eggs in Blairgowrie's Farm Shop recently, and being the gullible fool that I am (and also loving ducks, scrambled eggs and hilarity in various forms) - I had to buy them. I couldn't quite get over the label on the box, but seemingly my actions over the next few days cemented the concept in every way.

I've only recently returned to the world of egg consumption, you know how when you cook eggs wrongly - just how much you can be turned against these protein rich little orbs. All is fine now in my egg cooking, and I thought I'd branch out into consuming duck eggs, which seemed like such a good idea - big, mighty pale eggs that surprised me from the comic carton I had brought home, giggling all the way. And what fine scrambled deliciousness they made - a perfect and wholesome item to enjoy with bacon and mushrooms - so very yellow, and kind of bright flavoured (if that's at all possible?)

However, I am more of a fan of feeding the little quacking sweeties, believe it or not. Whilst the male of the species do get way out of hand in breeding season, and the fact that the female have a rather shocking trick to fix this issue (look it up and be astounded) - the pleasure gained from a dose of duck feeding outweighs by far, the joy of eating of them, (crispy fried duck pancakes excluded perhaps) .

For some reason, my daughter insists that feeding birds white bread gives them angel wing (a bad thing for a bird, though nicely named) and now I can't allow myself to use anything other than brown bread for the noisy flappers, but let's be honest - what in this day and age, how could 88p be spent in this day and age and provide so much joy for all ages ?

N.B. Having written this post and confirmed the reality of my love of ducks,

I will NEVER be able to eat any form of duck EVER AGAIN.

St Ninians Cathedral Perth Scotland

Scotland's Open Doors Days opened many doors in Perth, people ventured into new places that hopefully opened their eyes to the unusual or at least, the new. I'm glad to say I was one of these people - although time was against me to visit many venues, I did feel strangely pulled towards St Ninians Cathedral on North Methven Street in Perth - a building I had often admired and had been advised to enjoy from inside if I ever got the chance. I'm not a religious person at all, but can appreciated places that have a unique and peaceful atmosphere, as well as those easy on the eye. I have to admit - St Ninians really is a special place, even from an absolute non believers perspective.

Perhaps this was partly to do with the friendliness of the folk - it being an Open Door event - those who were overseeing the event, I guess were on "Super friendly mode", but generally this didn't seem faked, and their attitude didn't alter once they heard my lack of faith. Some time ago, they held Meditation Evenings here - I found this impressive and open minded, apparently many churches open their doors to such events.

The architecture just blew me away - so many eye pleasing arches and stained windows, carvings created with such exact care and skill, much of my wee saunter was enjoyed with a member of the Friends of Perth Cathedral Music playing the piano - not hymns specifically, but generally cheerful and upbeat tunes that I recognised but couldn't name - either way, it added hugely to the experience and the welcoming vibe. It surely is a acoustically perfect place to hear music of any type.

The chance to walk in the 'official' part of the Cathedral - were all the important ceremonies were led felt amazing, though it did feel slightly trespassy - but once I got chatting to the folk who are in charge of the Cathedral, it didn't feel like anyone was going to come and remove me any time soon. And yes, I had the non-religious conversation - but this involved my appreciation of the building having such a beautiful feeling in it, that everything that it held inside it was cared for deeply, and done with love. And that was the enduring feeling I had during my visit - was one of love, which at the end of whoever's day - is really what counts..

In Scotland, and throughout the UK, many organisations have sprung up which recognise the importance of our mental state and it's affect on our wellbeing. As our understanding of the brain and all the wonderful things it can do develops, so does our recognition of how this marvellous organ can also cause us harm, sometimes beyond our control.

The statistics for those seeking help with their mental health are increasing all the time - and slowly the need for help and support is being understood by the general public - allowing more people to come forward and receive much needed guidance. Hopefully over time this will eliminate the stigma that has been attached to many conditions and disorders.

Perthshire has been fortunate in having PlusPerth - an organisation led by those who have used mental health services themselves - something I feel is of major importance, and one that not only means that the needs of people are entirely understood, but that also provides an atmosphere where initial approach by someone in need of help is more likely. Seeking help is not in any way easy, and for certain generations it's not even considered - many people who need support do not even consider the idea of approaching a GP or organisation - these are often the people most in need. Plus Perth works hard to challenge stigma and prejudice and to include and value everyone, through a variety of forums, research, activities and campaigns.

Bi Polar Awareness Perth Scotland

I've been meaning to write post about the Bi Polar Support Group of Perth for a while, and I've now been hurtled into functioning mode seen as it is Scottish Bi Polar Awareness Week, where plenty of matter is available throughout Scotland, with support groups up and down the country.

Raising awareness of various conditions is something I feel is very worth while - and whilst I have no personal experience of this mental illness, I am aware of plenty of different mental health issues - both in children and adults. Whilst no amount of knowledge is going to cure anyone of their ills, learning about this much heard of but little truly understood condition may solve people's preconceptions of Bi Polar - in turn helping those with condition.

Aside from dealing with a huge range of symptoms - ranging from high activity and elation,to paranoia, deep depression and hallucinations, and plenty in between - those with the condition often have to deal with guilt, and fear of recurring cycles and what they may bring. As you can see, living with Bi Polar can be challenging enough before you deal with the likely stigma that can follow disclosure. I could imagine that if you live with the condition, you may want to talk about your varying mood swings to those you spend time with, but would be wary of their reaction.

Seen as this condition is not hugely rare, possibly as many 2 - 3% of the population may be affected - I suggest you make YOURSELF aware of what Bi Polar can mean - in this way you can be ready to understand and support anyone who comes into your life with this condition.

Festival Of Fudge Perth Scotland

Strange things can happen, even in Perth Scotland, and I was happy to witness such an oddity at the weekend, when I stumbled into the Festival of Fudge, being held next to St Johns Kirk on Saturday. Initially, I thought it was some kind of promo for a forthcoming show, but after not so serious investigation - I find that this rather excitable bunch of fudge fans have brought a bit of live cultural action to the street, organised by Mischief La-Bas simply for the pleasure of sharing laughs and anarchic art to who ever stumbles across it, and braves the possible mortification of dancing with a man in a boy scout outfit in front of a wigged DJ Judge Fudge, and who ever was witnessing the scene.

However, even with the ever typical style of weekend weather (ie. downpours, broken up with intermittent showers) - there was no stopping these fun seeking fudge heads. With the generous use of umbrellas and stage clearing equipment (ie. masses of paper towels) local shoppers - confused and slightly frightened - engaged in celebration of the confectionery, debated the values of fudge vs tablet (with most excellent propaganda from the Fudge Society representatives) and livened up a particularly soggy shopping day through interpretive dance, childish sweet obsessions and a rain hardy dance troupe.

I loved the whole ethos of the event, organised by Glasgow based Interactive Performance Company Mischief La-Bas - simply to bring joy to passers by, to engage them in temporary nuttiness, distracting them from their shopping compulsions and rain trudging, and to widen people's appreciation of the soft gorgeous matter of fudge.

Complementary Therapy Exchange Perth Scotland

Wendy Birse, Energy Therapist has arranged a Therapy Exchange to take place at The Hangar, Scone Airport, Perth on Saturday 27 August 2011 from 10.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.

This will be a good opportunity for all therapists, practitioners, intuitives, counsellors, coaches to come together to share their modalities, treatments, knowledge and skills. This will offer the chance to meet new people in an informal and supportive setting.

The Hangar has been chosen as it provides a suitable bright space, with a pleasant ambience and plenty of room for therapy tables and consultation areas. Electric sockets are available and there is ample parking on site.

During the course of the day you will be offering and receiving treatments or consultations in the spirit of a Therapy Exchange. Each participant brings whatever is needed to carry out their particular activity (including therapy tables/chairs if required). There will be group activities bring everyone together to generate a spirit of community.

A payment of £20 secures a place at this first Therapy Exchange. Water, teas and coffee will be available throughout the day. Please bring your own picnic lunch.

Visit Birnam Hotel On A Tour Of Perth Scotland

Living in Perth, I feel grateful everyday - even a small drive to the town results in a healthy display of tree life and green spaces, and for every ten miles I drive further into the heart of Scotland in any direction, the rewards just better and better. I know the typical want of locals is to get far far away from Perthshire, even from Scotland - to somewhere scorching, unknown and unlikely to be visited again. Nice as that can be, there are so many stunning locations close to home that can be enjoyed with fresh eyes and a feeling of adventure - giving yourself a holiday that doesn't involve the stress of huge travel and expense.

For this reason, and others - I treated my family to a few nights away at the Birnam Hotel, set in the unbelievably perfect setting of Dunkeld in Perthshire. Tempted as I was to go camping what with all this consistently summery weather (ahem), I was fortunate enough to book the Family Suite at this decadent building. Slightly concerned as my brood were to experience a hotel for the first time, and knowing that the history of the Birnam is steeped in nobility and royal romance - I nervously book myself and my lively offspring in, wondering just how much of a good idea this was !

Concern was thankfully not needed, and although the atmosphere matches the unique and charming decor of the hotel, my children and myself felt entirely at ease the whole time - nothing was too much bother for them to deal with. Any queries I had were answered with an informative smile and a genuine feeling that the staff wanted my stay to be as pleasant as possible, and even more so.

Between the ever ready approach of the staff, and the immensely spacious family suite - with it's own living room adding extra space to relax or tantrum in private. Thankfully it also had certain essentials nearby - tea and coffee facilities as well as a TV and DVD - the only grumble from any of us was that we actually had to leave at the end of our stay.

However, when you are a Carer for someone - this likelihood is pretty high that either yourself or the one you care for may have to deal with such a problem. There are ways that can be found, and methods that can be practiced to overcome poor mental health, and it is important that Carers of all types are aware of these, as well as the signs that may signal attention.

How Not To Go Hill Walking In Perth Scotland

Too much screen, too much rain - too much energy, well in my kids anyway - time for Massive Hill challenge. You know when you drive past enormously gorgeous hillsides, and you feel this deep need to climb it - well, that doesn't happen a great deal in our family, but for some reason a particular hill catches our spirit of inexperienced adventure on one of the back roads between Abernyte and Collace, not far from Perth in bonnie Scotland. Embarrassingly I don't know the name of this natural beast, yet, but am sure by the end of this post I will.

So after tea, I gather my brood, walking boots finally being worn for their purpose and head to the hill. The sun finally decides to stay out for more than twenty minutes, and I sure hope it lasts or the whole event is gonna feel very, very different. So, in our townie kind of way, we argue where would be the best place to park, dither over where to fence hop (I say hop, I real mean ungainly climb) and with nervous laughter and giggling we begin our task. The very pinnacle of the hill is where we want to be, but as we approach it - we are struck by how much more mountain like it looks as we get closer, and how very jagged and unruly the terrain actually is. Glad the kids have got the right foot wear, aware how very wrong mine are. I silently curse the swift scooting bunnies we watch them flee up the hillside - the tiny effective hill dwellers.

So in typical not entirely thought through spirit, my son still has his ipod shuffle attached with gospel filling his ears, and my daughter seems to think that this whole episode can be done with her hands shoved in her pockets. I, of course, am carting my mother bag around me, swinging and lurching, promising to chuck out all it's contents at any point. Happy as it usually is to contain all my essential items to life, the addition of two water bottles, a tangerine and a half eaten box of six month old jelly beans (emergency bribary matter) proved too much for it, and all of a sudden this whole concept seemed a little on the wacky side.

How we got as far as we did, I really am not sure - possibly a combination of stubbornness, as well as the terrain gradually getting trickier and changing under foot kept us distracted enough to realise just how high we'd climbed. At the point where things were getting pretty edgy in terms of height but oh-so-beautiful in terms of view, with one child refusing to go any further, and the other one insisting on reaching the rocky out crop we originally talked of - my internal mother alarm took hold and it was time to calm and gather my off spring and head to lower ground.

All very well, but when your child - whom you know very well, reminds you how scared of "down" he is, with the realisation that the going down is actually trickier than going up, it's time to summon up your mother strength, inform your child that this is not a choice, it's a fact that down is where we are heading, and that no, we cannot call the fire brigade. Between my eldest informing us how to bum slide down the grassier parts, avoiding the angular boulders in a chirpy voice from far below, and my youngest in tantrum recovery but needing to be 'down' as quickly as possible - it was quite a test of patience, calm instruction and hand bag control as we eventually reach relatively level ground - all of us pretty relieved and delighted that we got as far as we did, but mostly that we were now as 'down' as we needed to be with smiles on our faces, limbs and sanity intact, and a couple of jellybeans to celebrate our survival of Massive Hill.

Now - it's late, and I still don't know the name of this incredible natural challenge, for now I'll call it Jellybean Mountain, that'll do.

This is found to be of great benefit, as well as the opportunity to put them in touch with other Carers to share experiences, knowledge and to be around those who understand their situation.

As part of PKAVS, Perth’s Carers Centre have organised several activities for Carers of all types - covering a range of interests , the next one to be held is Researching Family Trees. To be held at AK Bell library in Perth, for a couple of hours on Thursday 25th August between 10am - 12pm.

The Carers Centre, part of Perth's excellent charity PKAVS - is starting a new group which aims to help parents and carers talk to their children about relationships and growing up. The group will be fun and informal, and will run for 8 weeks from Wednesday 17th August from 10.00am - 12.00pm, and will be held at The Gateway, North Methven Street, Perth in Scotland. The course is free and open to all.

Speakeasy is a fun and relaxed course for mums, dads and carers of children of all ages. Courses are delivered by skilled FPA trainers in small and friendly groups - with the aim of giving parents the skills to discuss these important issues with their children in a stress free and genuine manner.

Flash Floods In Perth Scotland

A crazy weekend here in Perth - don't think I've ever seen so much rain fall in one day. Roads became rivers and driving skills soon required sub aqua technique. The flash floods sorted out everyone's ideas of 'What shall we do this weekend' to 'Are we actually gonna make it home today?' Quite the weather, and very localised - my friend over in Glencarse thought I had gone gaga after my blethering texts about floods, traffic, tantrums and birthday cakes, as she sat in her sunny yard reading my incoherent typed ramblings.

I count myself very lucky that no damage was done, no dwelling ruined by filthy rain water, and that I didn't have to swim for my life - which may well have been lost considering my swim skills. Plenty of places have suffered though, and I feel for them - this part of Scotland still not geared up for that kind of weather, and water destroys, smells and lingers for a long time afterwards.

The following morning it was as if the whole chaos had been imagined - birds were tweeting, roads were mostly dry with very little hint of Saturday's deluge, and after a fair amount of coffee - sunny moments were captured of lambs looking loved up and nature looking well fed and watered.

Field Of Planted Summer Kinnaird Perth Scotland

So whilst we all know the weather has been tragic this last week or so in Perth, there have been moments of intense sunshine - when we all run out of the house to relish the rays for as long as they last. Even with heavy dark clouds hanging over head - Perthshire still looks picturesque - this yellow of this field of oilseed rape screams even louder at me against the foreboding clouds - which of course opened up on us quite soon after this shot was taken outside of Kinnaird on a return journey from Dundee (where it also rained).

This weather can't last forever, remember the snow of last winter in Scotland, which at the time felt endless - it did eventually vanish and Spring happened along, albeit kind of slowly. Patience, brollies and back up plans seen the best way to 'enjoy' (or survive) this summer in Perthshire.

Dundee Cosplayers Scotland

Another wet weekend in Scotland, but a fair few folk were creating their own brands of seriously soaked amusement. Turning up to Camperdown Park with kids in tow and a hopeful picnic prepared, only to be greeted with an already rain logged play park and deeply unhappy looking seagulls - our day brightened with the joy of a sheltered picnic table, and some unique park dwellers, not looking too Dundonian at all. Looking really far too chirpy and interesting to be ignored, I mortified my kids and my pal and went for a blether with them.

Turns out these young scamps were engaging in Cosplay - something new to my brain, and an idea that made me smile with pride and amusement - why, these young fans of animation have taken their interests into the real world, beyond the page and the screen - and making something even bigger and better out of it . Being vaguely aware of Manga and japanese animation (thankfully) - a most cheery pigtailed lass and one of her smiley face painted pals let me in on the secret of dressing up as your favorite character from whatever obscure creation is your thing, getting together with other brazen but endearing young 'Cosplayers' and spending time being that character, being as daft (in an entirely) wholesome manner out in public, and generally having a dandy time of it.

The weekend was the legendary T In The Park weekend, and I loved the fact that these friendly oddities were going against the grain and enjoying themselves in a far more unique manner, all of whom were believe it or not, straight as a die.

Seems it's quite the rage worldwide, obviously a real big involvement in Japan - but I'm not too sure how many other folk (certainly of an older variety - ahem - had heard of it). I'd heartily recommend if your feeling that way inclined and are in a vague Scottish area to get in touch with them on their newly formed blog or on twitter at @DundeeCosplay Some folk may think it a little on the odd side, but I can only see joy coming from this particular obsession, and it looks far more fun than hanging out in bus stops looking out for stuff to kick.

Oh, and we also found a wee frog, who was so sweet it really did need including in this post.

An excellent combination of outside enjoyment and creating wonderful anythings in a user friendly work shed up Kinnoull Hill in Perthshire. That creative bod Lisa Earl is at it again - on the 25th June at either 10am or 12.30pm - you can ransack a fine collection of rubbish to construct anything that rings your bells. On the 26th June at either 10am or 12.30pm - a more specific mission to create Rockets and Robots will be underway, rocket fuel not essential (or advised).

Any of these sessions cost only £10 for the two hour period of anarchic art, materials and smiles are included in the price. All workshops are held at the Shed on Jubilee Car Park, Muirhall Road, Kinnoull Hill in Perth. Spaces must be booked, and children will need to remain accompanied throughout the session. Most of us have ups and downs in our mood. But if you have bipolar disorder, you get extreme mood swings. This makes it hard to lead a normal life. In between the big highs and big lows, your mood may be normal and steady for weeks, months or even years.

If your doctor tells you that you have bipolar disorder it means you have had at least one bout of very high mood. That is called mania. These bouts are also known as manic episodes. Most people with bipolar disorder also have at least one bout of very low mood, called major depression. Because it happens as part of bipolar disorder, doctors refer to it as bipolar depression.

Coping with this mental illness is a difficult task, for those with the disorder but also their loved ones. A support group exists in Perth, where those who need to can meet and gain support, share information and talk about their frustrations with others who totally understand.

Breathing Space specifically, but not exclusively targets young men who are experiencing difficulties and unhappiness in their lives. The focus is to provide skilled assistance at an early stage and prevent problems escalating
Those living with mental health problems and those experiencing emotional distress
Family members, partners and friends who are concerned about their own wellbeing and that of people they care about.

As part of Mental Health week, a stand and volunteer will be at St Johns Shopping Centre in Perth on Monday 11th October, to talk to anyone who needs an ear to listen to them. If you can't make it, phone the number above at any time. Breathing Space is a free, easily accessible and confidential listening service in which callers may be offered advice, guidance and support underpinned by empathy, warmth and understanding.

A signposting service into other statutory or voluntary agencies empowers callers and provides a stepping stone for them to access local services. Mental health issues are more common that you'd think, and getting help with them is the right thing to do.

PLUS is a local mental health charity covering Perth and Kinross, Scotland. This year PLUS intends launching a Mental Health Handbook to bridge the massive information gap that service users experience, especially on discharge from hospital. An anti-stigma programme of events has been organised throughout the summer months this year in conjunction with "See Me" Scotland to combat the inequalities and prejudice experienced by service users.

As part of their campaign are holding Mental Health Awareness Information stands in Perth Shopping Mall 9-4pm from 10th October, providing well needed information ranging from addictions, young people's mental health to general well being. Please join in the awareness raising experience Studio Theatre, Mill St, Perth on Friday 8th Oct, 1.30pm as theatre and role play are used to promote hope to those affected by dementia.

Also that afternoon another play titled “You Don’t Know Me” By Carolyn McCole will take place. When working with people with dementia it is easy to become ‘shut down’ to the painful reality of the illness. Portrayed in a light hearted manner, this play aims to remind viewers of the importance of laughter alongside that of compassion and understanding. It also explores the changing relationship between a person with dementia and their family.

This will be followed by a presentation from Hearts and Minds, a charity who run the Elderflowers programme in Scotland. The Elderflowers are a team of professional performers who work with elderly dementia patients, using clown-based techniques to encourage communication, interaction and laughter.

Anyone would be surprised and delighted to see this sight, especially on a partially sunny (from one nano second to the other) day driving beyond Perth, just outside of Newburgh in Fife.

A field full of sunflowers is not something I have witnessed before, certainly not in Scotland (oh land of the constant sunshine), and although I annoyed a farmer by inappropriate but brief parking, I think it was worth the stop.

Plus Perth will be running a number of events throughout October as part of its annual "Involving Mental Health Matters" campaign, which coincides with World Mental Health Day and the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival.

Photographer Graham Miller presents a series of dramatic, large-scale portraits taken over the last year featuring workers from Perth’s Walled Garden. The Walled Garden is a community-based project which helps people who are recovering from mental health problems and seeks to challenge the stigma associated with mental ill health. Come and enjoy the launch of this photography exhibition with people at its heart. Robin Baillie, outreach officer from the National Gallery is to launch this event to be held in Mill Street, Perth on Tuesday 5th October.

Hmmm, I've been trying to be soooo good this week, cake wise at least, and have lowered myself to drooling over pictures of amazing looking cupcakes, these beauties have been lovingly created by magical ladies at The Scarlet Bakery based in Dundee, Scotland - who not only create edible pleasures but do so with a clear conscience as they use fair trade and local produce where ever possible. They can also offer dairy free, gluten free alternatives of cupcakes - but still with all the delicious decorations and ultimate yumminess.

Obviously, they are not your usual bakers, and can produce more or less whatever you wish to order for parties, weddings, or just general cupcake feasts and deliver them also in the Dundee area. Need to know where to go to feast on this gem - strangely, it's in Perth Scotland, at Willowgate Fisheries Cafe. Folk have problems finding it, but it's really not that hard, follow the directions on the post. Well worth the slight mental effort.

Tour Perth Autumn Trees Scotland

The trees are in that in between stage of turning, some just cannot contain their excitement and are transforming at a swifter pace than their relatives, others have the patience to wait. Even at this stage I find huge pleasure in watching what they are all doing, the oddness of the partial sections of trees in a sudden burst of bright red or fluorescent pink, make me chuckle to myself.

This bench on the banks of the Tay at the Inch Park in Perth, is obviously dedicated to someone else who saw much pleasure in each stage of life, and all it's stages. "Treasure what you hold" indeed.

Tour Balbeggie Secret Bunker Perth Scotland

Strange what you learn about a place you think you know quite well. On the way out of Balbeggie, I was told by my eleven year old about a war time bunker at the edge of the road, hidden in a bush, but accessible for exciting times by wee people, and bigger ones also.

And so after school one day we had to stop and discover just how thrilling a small dark damp space could be - it turned out to be pretty thorny, and seemingly impossible to get into, but in fact entirely tardis like - instead of a shrunken dwelling it turned out to be really quite spacious, with two peeky out windows to see if the bad guys had gone yet.

My boy was a bit wigged out with it being so dark, next time we are going armed with torches !

Perthshire residents are being urged not to miss out on the chance for learning new skills. Currently there are 10, yes, ten ventures offering informal learning opportunities. Classes include computing, dance, yoga, tai chi, sports, art amd crafts. Perth and Kinross Council's lifelong learning officer Liz Grant says " Through the efforts of hard working volunteers, the AEA's offer a diverse range of opportunities for adults to learn new skills and develop their interests. I would urge residents to find out what is available in their area."

Tour Perth ADHD Support Group Scotland

Attention Deficit Hyperative Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Hyperkinetic Disorder (HKD) is a neurobiological disorder caused by an imbalance of some of the neuro transmitters found in the brain, called norepinephrine and dopamine. ADHD is one of the most common disorders of childhood and adolescence and is characterised by symptoms of impulsivity, hyperactivity and/or attention. Whilst ADHD behaviours occur to some extent in most of us, the difference between normal behaviours and ADHD is the severity of the problem and difficulties caused. A family worker can provide support and help in the home, work or a school environment on a wide range of topics including Form Filling, multi agency meetings and advocacy. Families affected by ADHD can often feel isolated and unsure of procedures and entitlements.

The Perth and Kinross ADHD Support Group, as the name suggests, offers support, understanding and information to parents and carers of young people affected by ADHD in the Perth area of Scotland. Funding is a constant issue as this essential group does not receive a Service Level Agreement from the council, and sources financial support from where ever it can, including the recent generous offer of office space from Kenny Simpson - luckily the Group now have a base at Unit 5, Tayview Industrial Estate, Friarton Road in Perth.

The group runs a Duke Of Edinburgh Youth Group from the age of 14 years and up. They have the opportunity to socialise with peers, learn new skills and have some fun. Parent Support Group Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month from 7pm - 9pm at the Tayview Office as well as a drop in service on Mondays and Fridays afternoons between 1pm and 4pm.

Tour Perth Stewart Tower Ice Cream Dairy Scotland

I was such a good lass when I had a delicious lunch at Stewart Tower recently, you almost won't believe it! Me, and a load of ice cream on a sunny afternoon visit - and my lack of consumption of any of it. Plenty of drooling, and choosing a concoction in my mind, but no - not a drop passed my lips. I did however, feast on an amazing brie, cranberry and bacon panini - that filled me up so well and helped me avoid that hip groaning addition of creamy goodness - all of which they make on the premises.

I consoled myself with some fine goat therapy just outside in their paddocks, some fine looking beasts in there, they did look a wee bit crabby though - probably due to their lack of ice cream too.

Tour Perth Tea Room Scotland

Oooh, another tea room with yet more possibilities of undiscovered cakes ! This one I found in Blairgowrie - a great wee place to dander around, checking out the unique shops and brilliant river walks, as well as the coffee stops that are essential on any day out anywhere, especially in Scotland - they do it properly here, with style, occasional doilie use and plenty of strong java. I didn't have time to stop this time, as I was on my way to Cargills Bistro down by the river, but next time I may well have to take a ganders.

"Time For Tea" made me think of Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, a film I thoroughly enjoyed with the kids this year, many of the quotes are banded around our house almost every day to all our shared hilarity.

Tour Perth Mental Health Honesty Exhibition Scotland

PLUS Perth, have arrange for Robin Bailie to speak at the forthcoming emotive exhibition of Honesty - large scale photographic portraits of folk who are recovering from mental health difficulties. These portraits were taken over a period of time whilst green fingered folk tended their gardens and minds in the grounds Murray Hospital, Perth in Scotland. It is a brilliant exhibition which has been part of the recent worldwide campaign to banish stigma attached to mental health illness, and the more locally held 'Involving Mental Health Matters Campaign.'.

Robin Bailie is to take the floor opening up discussions on the use of art as a tool to transform communities, as well as changing attitudes and pre conceptions. This event is by invitation only, on Tuesday 5th October, although the exhibition itself will be open on the Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at the Studio Theatre in Perth.

Graham Miller, the photographer of the Honesty Exhibition, has said this in a previous interview with the Courier.

"If you're not connected to someone with mental illness you think, well it's not as bad as a physical illness is it? The reality is that it can be worse, because at least a physical illness is visible. A mental illness can affect you more precisely because it is invisible."

The silver lining of their condition, Graham reckons, is a level of self-awareness other people don't have.

"Having a mental illness makes you examine yourself more than other people do, and working alongside fellow sufferers helps because they know they're not alone. It's lovely to watch how well they work together. The way the world is at the moment, all the financial crap that's going on, everything is about looking after number one. That's what makes these guys so refreshing."

I cannot say that I've just taken this photo today, I admit it at the start of the week, nor can I say that I haven't tinkered with it in Picasa - but I did take the photo, and try as much as I did, I kind of missed the best of the sunset in Perth - hurtling back from Glencarse with hungry kids - but all of us on a mission to catch the joy of the sun setting over Scotland. I do kind of like the effects though - it does feel like cheating, but at least I'm admitting it !

Willowgate Fisheries is a relatively new trout and salmon loch that is becoming more popular every month, not only for it's peaceful area just on the outskirts of the town of Perth, but also for it's warming snacks and meals as well as it's fishing tuition and superb hive of angling knowledge with a constant ghillie or two always present to catch up on the news of Perthshire's fishing beats.

When I visited last, there was a family of swans preening themselves in readiness for an afternoon of sun bathing, well as much as is possible for a September in Scotland.

From Dundee leave the A90 at the Perth junction. Take the slip road to Perth. On joining the slip road look for the sign pointing left to Kinfauns & Walnut Grove; then just 100 metres beyond that take the signed track to the left. Cross the railway bridge then bear right onto the access road down to the fishery.

There are many beautiful parts to Perthshire, and one that isn't appreciated enough is Blairgowrie, with it's stunning riverside beauty which has a wealth of great little eateries along it's path. One of these is Cargill's Bistro - found on Lower Mill Street. It's a superb place, not only inside but also outside with it's sunny patio welcoming the local butterflies.

The staff are chirpy and friendly, with nothing being too much bother - they seem to delight in serving you the food that is made-with-love from their kitchen. I doubt they have many unhappy customers to deal with, if my previous visits are anything to go by. The place seems full of contented regulars, and local folk who talk of Cargills only seem to have good things to say. Not only are they open from 10.30 to please shoppers and visitors with their breakfast, teas, coffees and delicious homemade snacks, their lunch menu will leave you full and complete ready for a wander down the River Ericht.

There seems no stopping with this eatery, lunch can be served from 12 pm until 2.30pm, and then dinner service begins at 5.30pm - 9pm. They currently have a soup, sandwich, salad or chips for £5.95 between 10.30 - 5pm - what more could you ask for??? Oh aye, they serve delicious made on the premises delights such as these !

The River Ericht runs through the middle of Blairgowrie, Perthshire and it's name comes from the Scots Gaelic word for `beauteous`, understandably so. It has a much cosier feel to it that the expansive River Tay, and is all the more accessible with many brilliant cafes and eateries along the way.

If you find some time to wander along the River you'll find yourself amongst some stunningly fertile flora and fauna, as well as picnic patches and easily accessed rock pools to discover with a net and some wellies.

Blairgowrie Textile Artist Tour Perth Scotland

Among the creative artists who are opening their doors in Perthshire this week, is a delightful collection of textile artists. One who I had the good fortune of finding some time to visit was Dierdre Gittins, a mixed media artist who finds her inspiration in the beautiful Scottish landscape. Her work is not too abstract and so the natural beauty is kept within her work. She also creates intricate embroidered pictures, and also the most delightful tiny shoes - created after she read about a legend of people placing shoes in chimneys and walls to bring good luck to the residents who live in them !

Perthshire Open Studios has a wealth of talented creators throughout Perth, Blairgowrie, whose work may not always be available so if you see someone in the brochures that interests you, make the effort and go along and see what there up to - they'll be delighted to have visitors for sure.

Tour Perth Open Studios Stone Carving Scotland

Perthshire's Open Studio week has been a wonderful, letting many folk discover so many previously un known artists and crafters share their creations with interested parties from Perth and beyond in Scotland.

Although time hasn't been entirely on my side this week, I did manage to visit of few of the artists on the orange route, around Blairgowrie - and was rather taken by these stove carvings from a friendly gentleman artist who has taken up stone carving and dry stone walling as a hobby, using recycled stone whenever he can - turning what is wasted matter into items to love and adorn peoples homes and gardens.

John Gettins, is enthusiastic about his work and creates these wonderful items for pleasure, but is also open to commissioned work. You can find John and several other artists works at the Stone Paper Cloth studios at Pinewood, Forebank Road, Rattray, Blairgowrie.

Tour Perth Willowgate Wildfowl Scotland

A splendid time can be had admiring the wild life at Willowgate Salmon Fisheries, whether you're a fisherman type or not. It's an amazing zone of calm even though surrounded by some of Perth's busiest roads. I like to see the concentration on the fishermen's faces as they fish in all weathers, even more so if I am sat inside in the homely cafe eating homemade cakes and delicious soups - I wasn't alone in that idea today as the cafe was packed full of folk admiring the view and waiting for their fishermen husbands to come in and take them home.

I was lucky to get a quick dose of sunshine and a bit of sneaking up and caught these young wild fowl having themselves a preen in the afternoon sun.

Croft Moraig translates from the gaelic as the Field of Mary, and has an incredible feel to it. Tour Dunkeld Pet Store Perth Scotland

I'd not been to Dunkeld for a while, and was surprised to see a new Pet Store had opened - with some severely oogy offerings - pigs ears ! I struggle with these - they are just so very.......not really sure how to describe them - butchered? The Pet Shop also has pig snouts, and whilst I did photograph them, I don't feel too inclined to post them here, there is a limit. Mind you, if any dogs are reading the blog (unlikely I know) they may feel differently.

I was delighted to see the Store also had a baby Corn Snake for sale, I had to have a wee shifty - and right enough the little cutie was as wee as mine was when I first got him a few years ago, and very appealing he is too. The owner is a very friendly guy, with a fair range of aquatic, rodent and other foods in stock - even duck food, which I will be feeding my favourite local Perth ducks very soon.

On a shopping mission to Perth Scotland recently, a young man with a very curly wig walked passed me - and being such an oddity in Perth, I had to stop and ask him what he was up to - and what was with the wig ! He explained he was on an awareness raising day for the Ramana Trust, which although is based in Manchester, it seems they often tour the UK spreading their good message.

Tour Perth Iain Kerr Fundraising Derby Scotland

A fantastic fund raising Parlour Derby is being held this weekend at Tulloch Institute, Perth Scotland. A former Perth footballer Iain Kerr, was struck down with Lymes Disease. It took some time to recognise what he was suffering from. He eventually had to take early retirement from his roads technician job with Perth and Kinross Council in 2009. Lymes Disease is very hard to diagnose, but can debilitate people severely. It can be picked up from tics - and begins quite harmlessly but can lead to lesions on the brain and blindness.

Bankfoot JFC chairman Robin ‘Woody’ Wood has organised the event, to pay for surgery costing £5500, so in addition to the donkey derby, other fundraisers have been organised too.

The first race will be at 7.30pm this Saturday 4th September. In addition to a hilarious Derby, an immense charity auction which includes a weekend in an Aston Martin DB9, ladies day at St. Johnstone, review a restaurant with Tam Cowan to appear in a national Newspaper, £300 new mobile, a spa day, signed rangers and celtic tops, signed Paulo Di Canio training top!!

Tour Perth Cats Protection League Scotland

The Perth Cats Protection Branch was established in May 2000 with 5 pens. Those pens were in people's gardens, mostly in Perth/Scone area. It soon became apparent that 5 pens were not going to cope with the demand and this has now increased this to 17 pens in 13 different locations throughout Perthshire, Scotland. As a result of this set-up, people looking for cats are not able to visit all of our cats at once, so the branch operate more like a dating agency and try to match up prospective owners with suitable cats.

If you are looking to give a cat a home, please bear in mind the following:- like people, not all the cats are young, pretty, cute and friendly but they all deserve a loving home. Older cats are much quieter, relaxing companions and usually far more grateful than the youngsters!

Tour Dunkeld Square Pipeband Perth Scotland

I love the Pipe Bands - and try to get to as many of the events as possible, these are shots of Blairgowrie and Rattray District Pipe Band beginning the proceedings of Birnam Highland Games in Dunkeld, Perthshire. As much as I love to hear them and to see them so organised and together when they produce the marvellous sound they do - I especially like to see them before the event - preparing, meeting up with associates and fellow musicians, local folk and family.

Maybe in Scotland we take Pipe Bands for granted, it's no work of a moment for all to be so incredible well turned out, swinging their perfectly arranged tartan and having their metal so twinkly and clean, not to mention the strange foot boot type things they wear. And all this before they even pipe up, arrange themselves and then march through the town all the while playing a perfect Scottish tune or two.

As many bands as I've seen - which admittedly are not a vast amount, but each time I see them, they never fail to please, and from the crowds gathered around the square - everyone of all ages come and appreciate the band, as they should.

The autumn session of courses begins soon in Pathways Learning Centre in South Street, Perth. There are a whole range of courses to choose from including French, Spanish or Italian and a wealth of creative courses such as digital photography or watercolour.

An ILA grant can be applied for to cover the cost of the fees, giving the opportunity to extend your skills for free ! Tour Perth Croissant Bakers Scotland

So many reasons to love Perth, and many of them can be enhanced with the aid of a baked pleasure in a box. This particular carton of joy came from Goodfellows and Steven Bakers, in Scott Street - which provides a wealth of delicious baked glory to eat in - or to scuttle away and consume in private, which is exactly what I did with this cream and strawberry filled croissant. I have to admit, it tasted far better than it looked - and it looked incredible as you see.

Tour Perth Pipe Band Scone Gala Perth Scotland

Perth District Pipe Band entertaining folks at Scone Gala, near Perth on the 22nd August 2010 at Scone Parish Church. I love to see and hear the pipes, I especially love the broad age range in these bands, and how they all watch and guide each other. A Scottish community event is not complete without a good dose of bagpipes and drums, kilts and a few kids running wildly around the venue.

Tour Perth Scone Parish Church Gala Scotland

All the fun of the fair was had during Scone's Annual Gala, near Perth Scotland. Such events are fine moments of community spirit and baked treasures all combining into a PA supported celebration of what can happen when a small village pulls together all it's skills and talents.

I especially enjoyed the traditonal games constructed and enjoyed by the youngsters. In this day and age, it's quite a feat to entertain a child without the aid of electricity and a screen of a specific amount of pixels. But believe it or not, this was achieved - whilst initial opinions may have been low on approaching these hand made games, there was much hilarity and competitive action from those who joined in with the low technology entertainment.

Tour Perth Sword Swallowing Scotland

The strange and unusual sights witnessed on a day trip away from Perth - at Edinburgh's Fringe Festival. This lass couldn't be missed, whether she had her sword in her tongue at the time or not, quite the thing wandering up the Royal Mile, seemingly with not much else apart from step ladders, a bag on wheels, and a three foot sword.

Her show consisted of gathering small children around her to make some chaotic noise on drums whilst she nervously put this metal through her tongue, I wasn't sure who was most nervous - the watching children or her.

Tour Perth Mac Floyd Perth Theatre Scotland

Perth Pink Floyd fans have the chance to come and absorb the joy of the closest thing to the real thing they'll get these days. Tribute band Mac Floyd will play the Perth Theatre on the 27th August 2010. Ticket availability may be scarse, but if you can get them - you get them here. Played with attention to detail by this eight piece line up, all the regular favourites Wish You Were Here, Dark Side Of The Moon, and the whole of the Animals album - no mean feat for sure ! Light show included as well as some vivid memories for some perhaps in Scotland.

Tour Perth Living Sculpture Scotland

Every time I see a living sculpture they never fail to please, suitably spooky in their stillness, the only real thing to them their eyes - which makes them all the more watch-able. The female type was entirely convincing as a guaranteed act to freak small children out, which in fact she did - the big smile added to the small 'uns terror, but entranced by the smooth moves and shiny ball, the kid stayed till the end of the act.

This statue was entirely convincing, and it had to be pointed out to me that it was in fact a person - obviously the crow was not a living sculpture of a crow - but mighty impressive it was.

Tour Perth Bakers Scotland

There is something extra special about cakes that come in wee boxes, especially when they have enticing humourous words on the outside, and obscenely filled pleasures, dusted with icing sugar and filled with fresh cream and strawberries on the inside. These little beauties were gleefully purchased from Goodfellow and Steven Bakers in Perth, Scotland. Needless to say, they were consumed well within their best before date, and before someone else did.

Tour Edinburgh Fringe View Scotland

So much to see and so much to get blown away by in Edinburgh during the Fringe. Being my first visit, and having lived away from a city for a few years now, I spent the day in an overloaded state of "oh my goodness!" I loved it, was probably not prepared for it, but will certainly get back to it next year, with more, more cash and more preparation of the absolute madness that Edinburgh becomes during Festival time.

Tour Perth Gymnastics Scotland

One of the first acts I saw on arrival to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a rather cocky gymnast - and rightly so, seen as he did actually manage to jump over this 6ft tall volunteer with little help apart from some vigorous crowd encouragement and alot of willpower. Fair enough he started with the smaller audience member, just to highlight the challenge, but fair dues - he must have had extra power pants on.

Tour Perth Antique Rams Snuff Mull Scotland

I venture up to Destiny Antiques quite often, mooching through the various booths to see what gifts I can get for family and friends. I've seen this strange item this month, an Antique Silver Rams Head Snuff Mull (mull coming from the word mill). Even once I knew what it was called I didn't quite get the full picture until it was explained to me that it's a communal holder for snuff or tobacco, that would sit on a piece of furniture for all to help themselves from. How nice ! Obviously in this age of anti-smoking, no such item would ever be made now - so it is indeed an oddity that should be snapped up before it's gone.

Tour Perth Autistic Support Group Scotland

Since the launch of Perth's National Autistic Society, big changes in services have developed - and whilst Perth Scotland no longer has an NAS branch - they do now have two groups to support those on the autistic spectrum. Perth Autism Support provides events, training and activities for those under 16 years old and their families and carers, whilst The Spectrum Club provides input on issues faced by those over 16 years old. These new services have started in January 2012 and hope to develop further as time goes by. Do contact them and pass on the information to anyone who may benefit.

Plenty of laughs were had at the launch of Perth Scotland's National Autistic Society Branch on the 14th August 2010. Glorious amounts of food and jelly beans were consumed and a good old boogie was had by a few members too. Much thanks was given to all those MP's, friends, families and supporters who came along to celebrate the launch. Over £1500 was raised, which will help the branch to continue it's work in supporting those in the Perthshire area.

Tour Perth RWJ Drum and EFIP Cymbal Shop Scotland

I've walked past this music shop many a time with an interested eye, and finally I popped in to see the wonders recently. Not only do they have an amazing range of drum kits, they also stock UFIP Ear Created Cymbals - a specially crafted type of professional cymbal made in Italy. These are not the average shiny metal disc of noise, but individually hand crafted cymbals, at each stage of creation - the tone of the instrument is 'heard', so that a very specific sound can be engineered. RWJ Drum Store in Perth, specialises in supplying these cymbals - but can also offer Grade Level drumming tuition courses from their studio upstairs. Maurice McPherson the tutor is a certified tutor, hailing from Rock School, Trinity College in London.
